restoring oysters on the South River in Maryland

Environmental restoration isn't just about imlementing good policies and programs. Sometimes its about getting out in the field and literally getting your hands dirty. Pictured on the left, Will Nuckols joins with a group of local volunteers to restore oysters to the South River in Annapolis, Maryland. We had just removed the last of the seed oysters from a growout cage. Next the small oysters were moved to a sanctuary reef. The restoration of filter feeders to the Chesapeake is imporant for the health of the Bay. Oysters are one important way that biomass, such as the microscopic plants that thrive on the excess nureients that rull off of the land, is removed from the water column and transported into the benthic later in the bay.
